YYJ Highlights Accessibility Initiatives During National AccessAbility Week (May 31 – June 6)

RELEASE & MEDIA INVITE

Victoria, BC (June 01, 2026) – Victoria International Airport (YYJ) is joining airports across Canada in recognizing National AccessAbility Week by highlighting ongoing efforts to make air travel more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for all travellers.

Accessibility extends beyond physical infrastructure. It includes creating environments that support emotional comfort, cognitive ease, independence, and dignity throughout the travel journey. Through collaboration with community partners, travellers, airlines, and industry organizations, YYJ continues to identify opportunities to remove barriers and improve the guest experience.

Throughout the year, YYJ works with organizations and accessibility advocates to strengthen services, enhance staff training, and explore innovative ways to improve the travel experience.

Current accessibility initiatives include:

  • The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, which provides travellers with a discreet way to indicate they may require additional support, patience, or time while travelling.
  • MagnusCards, a smartphone application that offers step-by-step visual, audio, and text guidance to help travellers navigate everyday activities.
  • The Curbside Assistance Program, available 24 hours a day to assist travellers with disabilities or reduced mobility moving to and from their flights.
  • New accessibility enhancements throughout the terminal, including baggage carousel decals and other wayfinding improvements designed to support a more intuitive travel experience.

As part of National AccessAbility Week, YYJ is also highlighting its partnership with Woofability Assistance Dog Training.

Woofability trains service dogs to support individuals with medical and accessibility needs. A key part of the training process involves preparing dogs for public access environments, including airports. Training sessions at YYJ help dogs become comfortable with crowds, aircraft noise, public announcements, unfamiliar smells, and other elements of the airport environment so they can remain focused on supporting their handlers.

Media are invited to attend a Woofability training session at YYJ (please RSVP):

Woofability Airport Training Demonstration
Date: Tuesday, June 2
Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: Victoria International Airport (YYJ) Terminal

Interview opportunities will be available with YYJ representatives and Woofability participants.

National AccessAbility Week serves as a reminder that accessibility is a shared responsibility. By working together and learning from one another, airports across Canada continue to strengthen accessibility practices and create more consistent, supportive travel experiences for all.
