Field Chickweed (Cerastium arvense)

Chickweed is a low-growing annual with white flowers that grows in meadows, specifically within the Garry Oak meadow ecosystem. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils. It makes a good ground cover in gardens and disturbed areas. Chickweed acts as a pioneer species in the ecosystem by helping stabilize soils and providing food for birds, specifically chickens, hence its name. It has anti-inflammatory medicinal properties and is used to treat skin irritations as well as being edible for its high levels of vitamins and minerals.
