Victoria Airport Authority Achieves Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 2

Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) is proud to announce the successful achievement of Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation by the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation Program.

To achieve Level 1, the airport was required to map carbon emissions and understand where improvements could be made to reduce those emissions.  To achieve Level 2, YYJ demonstrated that those efforts resulted in a reduction in carbon footprint by 14.4% from the initial 2013 baseline year.

Since then, VAA has put into place many carbon management actions including solar and geothermal power installations, controlled ventilation systems to reduce wasted energy, replacement of hot water boilers with new efficient models, new building automation systems that continually monitor building performance and energy consumption, installation of LED light fixtures to replace traditional fixtures, and the development of a Carbon Management Plan.

“Victoria Airport Authority is committed to reducing our impact on the environment and reducing our carbon emissions. YYJ Victoria International Airport (YYJ) was the 3rd airport in North America to receive ACI Carbon Accreditation Level 1 and achieving the next level accreditation not only demonstrates our commitment to sustainability but encourages us to continue this important work,” said VAA President and CEO, Geoff Dickson.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation Program has a total of four levels, Mapping, Reduction, Optimisation and Neutrality.  Level 3 Certification involves optimization of CO2 reduction and requires third party engagement to identify emissions that are not directly under VAA control but impact the airport.  To achieve Level 3, VAA will be working with airport business partners including ground handlers, airlines and service partners to reduce their emissions and YYJ’s total carbon footprint.
